People across Wayne and Johnston Counties said they heard a loud boom around 9 p.m. Monday.
Johnston County resident Rich Girard shared security camera footage with WRAL News in which you can hear the loud boom ringing out.
Walter Vaughn also heard the sound from his home in Wayne County.
“I was just getting ready to go to bed,” he said. “We heard this loud sound. It sounded to me like something fell.”
Vaughn described the sound as a loud bang, thinking it could have been something falling from his attic. Upon investigation, he said it was clear that wasn’t it.
“My granddaughter and daughter said it shook their beds,” he said.
In a Facebook post, some people said they thought the sound was related to a house fire on Riverbend Road.
WRAL News confirmed with Wayne County officials that was not the case.
“Why doesn’t anybody know what happened?” Vaughn asked.
