Raleigh police warn of phone scam demanding immediate payment

The Raleigh Police Department is warning the public about a phone
scam.

Police said people will make fraudulent calls claiming people
have missed court dates, have a warrant or are involved in some legal situation.

Then, the people demand payment over the phone with credit
cards, gift cards, Bitcoin, cash and other unconventional means.

“The scammer may sound convincing and use real information
about you to make the scam appear credible,” Raleigh police wrote in a Facebook
post.

Raleigh police will never solicit a payment over the phone.

Police urge people to:

• Never provide personal or banking information or answer
calls from unknown or “possible scam” numbers.

• Don’t trust caller ID spoofing, and be wary of calls that
use fear or urgency to pressure you into immediate action.

• People are encouraged to contact law enforcement if they receive similar calls.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation
warned the public of a texting
scam
